Signage
Have you ever stopped and wondered how many signs you walk by in anyone given day? We come across “Stop” signs, street signs, no crossing signs, “Do Not Enter,” “Open,” “Closed,” “Beware of Dogs,” and the list can just go on and on. Signs are used to convey a message when a person can not stand there to deliver it in person. All of these signs, graphic displays that are made to grab your attention and make a statement is what is known as signage.
While we have already established the different statements that signs can make, but there are also different types of signs. Street signage are signs that are made out of metal and are most often embossed with letters to tell the name of the road a person is traveling. There are also electrical lighting signs and these are known as neon signage. These are often eye catching and used to lure a person into and establishment and set a mood.
When you walk into a superstore and look for signs for garage sales, rental houses, no trespassing and so on these are known as modular signs. If you are looking at a sign that is made specifically for a certain purpose for one specific customer, these are considered custom signage. As with everything else, there is also the hybrid type of signage that combines the sophistication of the custom sign with the less original modular sign.
Some signage is known simply by shape and color. Take a “STOP” sign as an example, the shape and the color is known as a “STOP” sign even if a person can not read. The shape of the sign has a lot to do with the message that is being conveyed. A square sign is used to convey information that the targeted audience needs. These signs tell you where something is or what something is.
Compare this to a sign that is circular. If a sign is circular this is a sign that is telling the audience that the message on the sign must be followed and the option to not follow the instructions is not available. There are also triangle shaped signs. A triangle shaped sign is forewarning a person of possible danger. This is quick reference to help peak your awareness so that you are more alert to your surrounding.
ignage is used to convey messages to an audience. They are used so often that they are seen more as a second language and many times their important and impact can be overlooked. Signage can help forewarn, give information and direction and tell of rules that must be followed. They can also help a business increase sales and help organizations get their message out to raise awareness.
